Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork. Randy Johnson Jersey .com) - The third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers will close out their non-conference slate on Tuesday evening, as they play host to the Davidson Wildcats at the John Paul Jones Arena. Tony Bennetts Cavaliers are one of six unbeatens left in college basketball and were last in action back on Dec. 21. That proved to be one of the most dominant performances of the season, as Virginia absolutely destroyed Harvard, in a lopsided 76-27 decision. With the win over the Crimson, Virginia has now won 17 straight games at home and moved to 11-0 on the year, the teams best start since 1992-93. Bob McKillops Wildcats are off to a pretty good start in their own right. Davidson has suffered just one defeat on the season and that came on Nov. 22 at nationally-ranked North Carolina (90-72). Since then the team has reeled off seven straight wins and moved to 9-1 overall with an 80-68 win over the College of Charleston last time out. Virginia holds an 11-4 advantage in the series with Davidson and has won seven straight over the Wildcats, including last years 70-57 victory at TWC Arena. Davidson hasnt posted a win in this series since 1974. Strong offensive performances have been the norm for Davidson this season, as the team generates 87.7 ppg to rank third nationally. The Wildcats shoot the ball extremely well at a 48.3-percent clip and that continues beyond the arc, where the team hits 41.4 percent of the time. In addition, Davidson has done a great job on the boards and boasts of a +9.1 rebounding margin. There is plenty of scoring depth, as four Wildcats are currently averaging double figures. Tyler Kalinoski leads the way with his 16.1 ppg. Jack Gibbs is hot on his trail with 15.6 ppg and also serves as the teams top distributor (5.0 apg). Peyton Aldridge and Jordan Barham close out the potent quartet with 12.4 and 10.8 ppg, respectively. Davidson was able to distance itself in the first half against the College of Charleston thanks to an 18-of-32 effort from the floor (.563), as the Wildcats took a 41-33 lead into the break. The team cooled off in the second half, but was able to keep the Cougars at bay to earn the win. Aldridge and Gibbs were sensational in the win. Aldridge nearly had a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Gibbs did complete the feat with 19 points and 11 boards. Barham finished the game with 14 points off the bench. Virginia is known for its defensive play, but the team took that to a new level against Harvard, as the Cavaliers tied the NCAA record in the shot-clock era by allowing just one field goal to the Crimson in the first half. The eight points allowed in the first half were the fewest allowed by Virginia in the shot-clock era as well. Meanwhile, the Cavs got it done offensively, shooting a scorching .596 from the floor in the game, including a .615 effort in the first half. Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon led the team with 15 points apiece. Tobey completed a double-double 10 rebounds, while Brogdon doled out six assists. Virginia very well may be the best defensive team in the country and that is saying a lot with the numbers top-ranked Kentucky is throwing out there. The Cavaliers currently lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 46.2 ppg, while holding foes to an anemic .310 shooting. The team also ranks in the top five in the country in rebounding margin (+14.2). Junior guard Justin Anderson is having a strong season offensively, averaging 15.1 ppg, while shooting .563 from the floor, including a ridiculous .600 from behind the arc (24-of-40). Brogdon (13.1 ppg) and Anthony Gill (12.1 ppg) round out the top scoring options on the roster. Jake Lamb Jersey . TSN Hockey Insiders Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie both reported Thursday that there have been ongoing trade discussions between the Oilers and Los Angeles Kings over forward Sam Gagner. A. J. Pollock Jersey . Bjoerndalen, who had failed to win any major race for two years before Sochi, writes in a Facebook entry that he is "full of energy and inspiration" after winning the 10-kilometre sprint and mixed relay at last months Olympics. http://www.diamondbacksteamproshop.com/customized/ . - Rookie Kyle Larson will start from the pole position Saturday night in the NASCAR race at Richmond International Raceway after a thunderstorm arrived just in time to wash out qualifying. DENVER -- Juan Nicasio bounced back nicely from his first loss of the season. Carlos Gonzalez homered before leaving with a finger injury, Nicasio pitched seven scoreless innings and drove in three runs, and the Colorado Rockies beat the New York Mets 7-4 on Thursday night. "All my breaking balls worked today and I had good command of my fastball, too," said Nicasio, who was dinged for a couple of home runs by the Los Angeles Dodgers while struggling with his location last time out during a 4 1-3 inning outing. "Thats why I was good today," Nicasio said. "I threw a lot of sliders for strikes, my fastball was down in the zone. When Im pitching good, I have command of my fastball, and keeping the ball down. I lost my command (last time out)." New York manager Terry Collins said Nicasio kept Mets batters guessing. "He moved the ball in and out," Collins said. "He threw strikes." Corey Dickerson added three hits, including an RBI triple and Nolan Arenado singled leading off the third to extend the majors longest active streak to 21 games. Hes tied for the fourth-longest hitting streak in Rockies team history. Gonzalez connected for his sixth home run of the season in the first inning, driving a 3-2 offering from Bartolo Colon (2-4) off the right-centre field facing just below the second deck. He was lifted in the fourth inning, replaced by pinch hitter Brandon Barnes, because of a bruised left index finger. His playing status was listed as day to day. "I dont think hes going to miss a lot of time," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "It was encouraging that the swelling was going down already." Colon allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He walked one and struck out three. "Bartolo left pitches over the plate. And we ran into a hot team," said Travis dArnaud, who homered in the ninth off reliever Chad Bettis. But Nicasio (3-1) was effective at the plate and on the mound. After allowing a one-out singgle in the second to Chris Young, Nicasio retired 12 batters in a row before issuing his lone walk in the sixth inning. Nick Ahmed Jersey. The only extra base hit he allowed was a double leading off the game to Juan Lagares. He was activated prior to the game after spending the previous two weeks on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. "Its a good step for him," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Weve seen Juan real good in the past, saw him good early and hopefully he gets on a roll." Nicasio also was a central figure in the Rockies offence. "We preach a lot to our pitchers if they can execute the game offensively theres probably a few Ws in there for them," Weiss said. Dickerson and Charlie Culberson hit successive two-out singles in the second and, running on the pitch, they both scored when Nicasio followed with a single that rolled to the right field corner. He added a sacrifice fly in the Rockies three-run fourth. Arenado also had a sacrifice fly and Charlie Blackmon an RBI single in the inning. Dickersons two-out triple in the fifth scored Justin Morneau, who was aboard with a single. The Mets avoided their third shutout of the season when Lagares, doubling for the second time in the game, hit a drive off Bettis in the eighth to the right centerfield gap to score pinch hitter Bobby Abreu from first. Bettis surrendered a two-out, three-run homer to dArnaud in the ninth before retiring Ruben Tejada on a fly ball to right. NOTES: Four of the seven home runs Colon has given up this season have come in the first inning. ... Colons four-pitch walk to Wilin Rosario leading off the fourth represented his first walk in 14 innings. ... Arenados 21-game hitting streak is the longest in the majors this season. ... Nicasios last multi-RBI game was June 14 against Philadelphia. ... The Mets Daniel Murphy went 0 for 4, snapping a 10-game hitting streak. ... Rockies catcher Rosario was back in the lineup after missing the previous four games with a left hand injury.
